Project Details :  Design Competition, Education Hub, DIu
Plot Area         : 108000 SqM
Built Up Area : 60000   SqM

The UT administration of Diu and Daman organised a design competition for an education centre on the island of Diu, spread over 108,000 sq m of land.

The main objective was to design and implement a world-class institution as per UGC and local rules and regulations.

The requirements for the design programme were given to us for conceptualising and designing government colleges like Arts, Commerce and Science colleges. Further, the government had also provided guidelines for the design of technical education in the form of Polytechnics or Diploma in Engineering, and since, Diu is one of the tourist destinations, the requirement also included a Hospitality Management Institute. The campus also includes several hostel blocks, recreational facilities and faculty residences.

In our concept, the colleges and various departments of engineering are spread out in a linear pattern in blocks, which form a kind of streets or narrow lanes along the blocks. The streetscape or pathways on the campus are inspired by the old city of Diu, and the proximity of the Pathway block creates a shadow on the path that will be comfortable for walking.

In the individual blocks of the college and institutes, climate-responsive architectural elements and strategies have been considered. Deep windows and Jali fins block direct sunlight in summer and winter, and Jali allows cool breezes to enter the classrooms. The windows on the southwest side have been kept narrow to create wind pressure and the windows on the opposite side have been kept wide to let the hot air escape.
