The Jalandhar Improvement Trust, a government body, initiated a design competition for the redevelopment of a vacant plot located on the outskirts of Jalandhar city. The site is strategically positioned along a National Highway, adjacent to a railway line, and bordered by an existing residential locality.
-
Prior to redevelopment, the plot was informally used by local residents for jogging, cricket, football, and other recreational activities. Recognising the social value of this space, the government announced a design competition to transform the site into a comprehensive sports and community hub. The proposed programme included both outdoor and indoor sports facilities, a café, corporate meeting rooms, an auditorium, an amphitheatre, and supporting public amenities.
-
To address safety, noise, and visual buffering from the National Highway, service road, and railway line, the design strategically places all indoor facilities along a 15-metre-wide road under a single, continuous built structure. This approach creates a strong physical buffer while enabling better control, security, and management of the entire campus.
-
The proposed building is designed as a Ground plus First Floor structure, with a centrally located reception acting as the primary node and dividing the facility into two functional zones.
-
Zone One accommodates public and administrative functions, including a multipurpose hall, conference rooms, open exhibition spaces, and administrative offices.
-
Zone Two houses active recreational and wellness facilities such as a gymnasium, badminton courts, swimming pool, restaurant, and library.
-
The rear portion of the site is preserved as an open and green recreational landscape. This area includes a jogging track, landscaped green spaces, outdoor sports courts, and a dedicated children’s play area, ensuring continuity of community use while enhancing the overall quality of the public realm.
-
The project aims to create a secure, inclusive, and multifunctional urban sports complex that balances built form with open spaces, while responding sensitively to its infrastructural and residential context.
